Xubuntu installation problems :(

I ran through the setup

guided, SCSI1 60GB

then as it was formatting it got 5% through then gave me this error --->

"the ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda] failed."

any ideas?

by the way i'm using a Toshiba Tecra m2

I just tried to install slackware 12.0 and during the installation it started an infinite loop of
"Write-error on swap-device (3:0:114190131)"

Have you tried to scan the disk for errors?
