Well it's only really the onboard stuff on the motherboard like LAN and audio, and the graphics card that you need to pay attention to. It's not like you need a "special" computer to run Linux.

Also both Intel and AMD will run Linux well, there's no better one to use. It depends on what you want to do.

Mainly the onboard LAN, onboard sound, and if you have any PCI cards then their compatability. Also modems are an issue. A "Winmodem" won't work in Linux usually, if you even have a modem these days.

Most LAN cards should be detected and configured automatically, but you can check the compatability on the website of the distribution you are installing sometimes.

My onboard sound didn't work when I installed Slackware.
