Default To Wine or not to Wine, that is the question

Have any of you have used that later versions of wine. If so, how well does it work? Am I stuck rebooting in to my window partion to play half-life 2? I would like to get rid of window all togather.

Well I messed with Wine a little bit a few months ago to see if I could get the original Half-Life to work on it. I got it to install, but it didn't run... maybe I'm just a n00b with Wine.

I've seen images of the original Half-Life running in Wine. I think HL2 could run too, don't see why not.

I heard that there are hidden install files on the cdrom. I tried to edit the fstab to unhide, but I failed. The install couldn't find the files. The setup.exe wasn't hidden but the install file are, from what I read on the winehq site.
