is it possible to access optical drives (ATA/IDE not SCSI) through emulated applications? if so obviously i woould like to know how. if it is relevant the linux os being used for this purpose is fedora core 4

i know i could access my optical drives in cedega (winex) when i installed hl2 ... and i could use them in vmware and qemu ... so its possible ... the only problem is that i didnt have to do anything special to get it to work ... it just worked.
thanks for the reply. i should have mentioned the programs in particular i am trying to use are dvd-shrink and dvd-decrypter. of course i have perfectly legal reasons to use these as i own the copyright licenses to the encrypted discs
