| Will Linux Run on this Computer and Which One Should I Use? Hi,
I been very interested lately about trying Linux and I was just wondering if it will run very decent on the PC specs below:
Intel Pentium 3 @ 1.0Ghz
256 SD Ram
10Gb Hard Drive
4mb Onboard Graphics
Also, if it will run which Linux OS should I use as there are quite a few and I am a total stranger to the Linux scene.
Thanks,
Rob |

| you can start with mandrake 10.1, suse, or fedora core if you want to dive right into it. Personally, I would reccomend mandrake if you are just starting out.
if you dont want to install an OS, then go with knoppix, which runs entirely off the cd. you can download cd images from this server: ftp.rutgers.edu port:21

| Usually the problem areas in term of Linux compatibility/configurability is modems, printers, and uncommon/extremely new hardware. |

| One problem you will find with Linux is that everyone has completely different opinions about which version of Linux to use. Personally my favourite is SuSE9.2, which came out recently and was a vast improvement on the previous versions - which one you choose is up to you but if you are new to it then i'd deffinately recommend going for something well known just because there is a fair bit more support about and more people are likely to be able to help you out |

| Those specs should be much more than enough to run almost any Linux, I would say. I'm running on a P133 with 32 MB! But I have to strip everything down to bare bones (Blackbox minimal window manager, Dillo browser). Linux is great in that it can be customized to your available hardware.

| The main problem you'll run into with older computers running Linux is the memory requirments of your desktop window manager. The most popular Gnome, for example, should run fine with 256mb of ram but it might be a little sluggish. It is unbearable with 128mb. However, there are some light weight window managers you might want to try. My philosophy is just install it and see what happens! |

| If you want to do everything in a graphical interface (Just as EASY as Windows), than you should use "SuSE", SuSE is a great Linux distro to begin with, I know someone who installed it by himself (he's only 12 years old), he configured everything himself, so it won't be difficult at all if you start with SuSE |

| How does SuSE compare to Fedora? Maybe I should switch, Novell just bought SuSE and my company is a Novell shop. They are not big into the Linux yet but have a few linux servers. Does SuSE have an update program like yum for fedora or apt for debian. I know SuSE is debian based.

| How is the Gui in SuSE? I currently use Fedora. Is it worth the switch. All of my files are on a file server so all I have are OS files on my PC. If they have a better package of tools it is worth is to switch.
