As far as I know,
vi
stands for "Visual Interface" since it was originally designed to provide a friendly frontend for the line editor,
ex
. I think it might be more appropriate if it stood for "Very Infuriating", but that's just my personal opinion

I'm not sure if it still does, but that was its original designed purpose.
