Default What's the Difference?

Between a Windows Sys Admin and a UNIX Sys Admin?

We (UNIX Sys Admins) solve problems by writing code.

They (Windows Sys Admins) solve problems by purchasing software.

I just got out of a SarbOx compliance review that's lasted the better part of three weeks (and isn't done yet). I was really struck by the fact that when we ran into an issue with a Security Control Implementation which is not included out of the box in the Windows environment, the Admins with a primarily Windows background don't have the slightest frame of reference of how to get things done without purchasing 3rd party utilities.

Time and time again, my response as Security Administrator was to say/think: Oh, it will be a simple matter to just write some VBScript to query the Active Directory database for xxx. That never seemed to occur to them, and they always responded with "Windows doesn't do this, but maybe there's a 3rd party tool we can purchase."

Odd. You just THINK differently with UNIX.
