well, for one thing, newer kernel gives you better support for your hardware... However, newer kernel might not be as stable as a time tested kernel.. but if your not running any servers or anything, it doesn't really matter.. overall, it's good to upgrade your kernel once in a while.. if your distro released a new version, it's usually a good idea to upgrade to it
