What is the simplest version of linux? one in which you do need to type code

look under distributions/minimalist or floppy and try a few, there's a bunch

you can run linux on anything from a PDA to a ibm 390 mainframe so what you plan on doing with it will help narrow your choices here, if its anything really weird chances are something can be fit anyway

Thanks, I looking for a simple one. red hat was a little too complicated for me.

I think you're looking for "user friendly". From my experience Mandrake is pretty good. I think they've changed the name to Mandriva now or something though.

ubuntu is very simple and is faster (in my experiance) than mandrake, suse, or fedora (the 3 "beginner" distro's)

I agree with jnev_89 Ubuntu rocks. It is a simple, basic unclutted OS with an root terminal and basic install

It's fantastic, highly reccomend it,

I would agree that some of the above listed distros offer pretty straight forward GUI's.
Linux is not a simple OS it takes time and dedication to truly master this OS.
I would not recommend looking solely for simple, choose one of the well supported and well prov-en distros. Then learn it. And learn to love it.

HAL91...runs straight from one 1.44MB floppy.
