Default Re: What is the point of linux?

Use VMWare or VitrualBox it is much better software for VM.

Linux does have Media Players. It is just finding the one that is right for you. I used several and i dont remember the one i liked off hand. If i had names i could tell you. Amorok! thats it.

That was a good player. K3B is a great burning software. There is so much choice when it comes to Linux that is what makes it tough. I mean DistroWatch is just one of the many places you can go to find information about the various Linux Distros. There was over 800 or something like that different ones last time i looked. You have to find one that is right for you.

Gnome or KDE
Debian, Suse, BSD or other

I mean that is jsut for looks and for kernel aspect. Right there alone you have almost 10 different choices and that is just basic stuff from my limit knowledge of Linux.

First thing you should do is get a few distros and try out the LiveCD's they offer.

Ubuntu for gnome interface
PCLinuxOS for KDE

That way at least you will know which style you want to work with. From there you can find a distro that is more suited to your needs.

Yes there is also way more than just Gnome and KDE for the window manager. Those are jsut the 2 i know of...

I think he had livecd'd it in vmware....... which isn't great for drivers.

Vmware OS quality also relies on your pc specs. As youre sharing all reources.

Try burning and then booting up your main box with the disk in the player to get best results.

You have to burn the iso image to the file rather than the file to the disk, a live CD is crappy for drivers a others have said.

User VMware or Virtual box an get a VM to play with.

To the OP, just know that BSD is not Linux. It is a Unix variant, but it is not Linux.

Linux is a Unix variant. Jsut as much as BSD is. BSD is just more pure to Unix than Linux is.

Umm, I know this, Mak. I was trying to point out to the OP that BSD is not Linux, but that it in fact is a Unix-variant, not Linux. I KNOW Linux is a Unix-variant, and stated that BSD is a Unix-variant, it's just not Linux. Your original listing of BSD did not make that clear IMO. What part of my post was wrong ?

Default Re: What is the point of linux?

Well you pointed out that BSD was a variant of Unix but never said anything about Linux being part of Unix. I dont see the distinction of making sure that people know that BSD is Unix and now Linux but at the same time they are all branches of the same tree.

To me it pretty much the same thing since they all fall under the *NIX category. Yeah i know people work real hard and most of the Linux community would throw a fit that i label them all the same, but as much as you try to hide the fact, they are just 2 different branches of the same thing. Just like Windows Desktop OS's and Windows Server OS's. They use the same exact Kernel, but one is for home use and the other is not.

To me saying that BSD is Unix and trying to make sure people know that they are not the same is just like trying to keep the Windows OS's separate. Yes i make sure to point out that Server OS's operate differently, but at the same time i do not try to actively turn people away from them. If someone chooses to use it i will do my best to help.

When i used PC-BSD i did not see that much difference between that and using PCLinuxOS or Kubuntu. The only thing that i found different was the package for installers. Which varies as widely as the amount of Distros. For a newer person, yes knowing the fact that BSD is not technically Linux is good, it wont affect them much. They wont realize that they are using a straight Unix based OS or a Linux based OS.
