It all depends on what you want your server to do.

Webserver/ftp? Linux. Hands down.

Enterprise grade LDAP across multiple sites? Windows (ie, Active Directory)

Resource hog on machines you really didn't want to be productive on in the first place? Novell

Linux/Unix owns the webserver market. Windows owns the business machine market. Both are slowly catching up on the other in these respects.

You have to understand that Windows and Unix were designed for completely different uses to begin with, so you can't expect Unix to be a good desktop OS, it has a long way to go before it can match Windows.

Windows Server 2003 will be just as stable as Unix if you configure it properly.

Ok, we now have 2 slow kids that have joined the class.

I will quote again.

The Question asked was : What OS a the best for Server

Btw, if you actually read the thread the 3rd post was:

whatever the case...

I currently work for a small company....internally i use windows 2003 since its easy to deal with and plus i really dont need much of it.

-file server
-fax server

thats about it....so generally securing and managing it is not that hard.

Just recently i was assigned a FEDORA server. To run as an email and web server....

Now im screwed. Ive spent so much time studying and learning how to use windows 2003. Now i have to kill myself with this linux

My best advice is always to run duplicate computer of the OS your using and test on that before doing any changes on the origional. I really screwed up the server recently and my boss wasnt to happy abt that.

(i think i went of track here regarding our subject)

I personally think, you need a professional to set up an OS.

If your a windows guru...its hopeless to say that Linux is best for a needed environment....if all you know is windows.

Its these dam small lil errors you get that bring you to a big hault. lot of time and thinking wasted.

And i dont beleive anyone should put themselves in a situation where years of experience is needed.

So now im stuck with this Fedora Core.....

Teaching yourself aint easy.

Whenever someone says that Windows is a superior Server OS than *NIX, I just chuckle to myself that they must not have a great deal of computing experience.

Really, this isn't even a legitimate discussion.
