It's all about personal preferance, everyone has different opinions.

Personally I use CentOS 4.X because I have always used RedHat and CentOS is the exact same thing as RedHat Enterprise Linux. Some of the most popular are Ubuntu, SuSe, Mandrake, and FreeBSD (mostly used for webservers). You're best bet is to first try some Live CDs that way you can make sure you even want to use Linux. If you do, then start trying out different distros and decide what you like best and stick with it.

Are you sure the "mac OS bar" at the bottom still wasn't windows? Stardock has an application called ObjectDock for Windows that does the same thing. Also, it isn't the best idea to base your decision on a cool looking bar, but that's my opinion.

BTW, it's LINUX not LUNIX!!

I can't tell just by a screenshot what distro that person is using.

But that bar at the bottom is the standard KDE bar, just customized a little bit. It's nothing special. If you load a GUI it'll look like that (GNOME/KDE/etc) or very close to it.

Hope that makes sense to you.

What?? No, that's totally wrong... Linux and Unix are two different operating systems. Linux isn't a GUI, and Unix isn't a command line.

Though Linux is highly based off Unix, it's still a different critter. I can take FreeBSD (which is a Unix variant, based off the Berkely distro) and pop X11 on it, viola, I have a GUI

As for Windows <-> Dos...same thing. the WinNT kernel is not the same critter that DOS was.

To answer your question...Get some live CD's, they will allow you to try out Linux without even installing anything. Full usability, without the installation. Knoppix is a very powerful Live CD, as well the others listed above Ubuntu, SuSE, Mandriva, etc all have LiveCD's, free to download. You will need an ISO burner, I suggest Alcohol 120, but ImgBurn does a fine job as well.

Me, I prefer Mandriva 2007 with KDE, preference is much the case though. SuSE is a fine OS as well.
