the problem is that most of the games only work under Windows; yet there is a chance to play games like Doom3 and UT2004 on linux, but you'd have to go research that yourself (I'm not a gamer). Anyway, you can go ahead and try any distribution you want (although I usually suggest you try out Slackware first), but make sure that:

1. You have access to the internet -When starting out you will obviously make a lot of mistakes and will be needing the help provided in the web.

2. Dual boot - Don't discard Windows yet as you will be trying Linux for the first time. I suggest you buy another hard drive and install whatever distribution you like, that way your windows partition'll be safe.

3. Read the documentation available

4. Have patience

Personally, I would choose mandrake (www.linux-mandrake.com). It is a very stable disto, and it's very user friendly. They also distribute a live CD version call Mandrake Move. You can download that image and test mandrake out, see if you like it. I have been working with mandrake for about 3 years now, and I live for it. It's amazing, and so secure. If you don't like mandrake though, I would also suggest, like fabyfakid, slackware, semi-userfriendly, very powerfull. Also, SUSE, and Debian, Redhat. these are all good distros, look around though, they're all free!

Linux is not a gamers' platform. I just thought I thought I'd get that out of the way.

Anyways, the distro you choose is based on your personal preferences. My best suggestion is that you try as many distros as you can, just to get a feel of what is right for you.
