Here's a good guide to get you started. http://www.crhc.uiuc.edu/~mjmille2/h...x-and-windows/

You could probably skip the "downloading resecure cd" part and do it later if you want to get started installing Ubuntu. The swap partition part is just hard drive space if you don't have a lot of memory, you can skip that if you want but if you have low memory on the laptop I suggest doing it.

If I wanted to use the live cd, how do I download that? When I try to download KNOPPIX there are many different files and I am not sure which to download. Do you think it would be best for me to just order a CD? If I do use this CD can I install different applications for Linux or will they be eraced each time I boot up again? Thanks for helping out a noob guys.

If you want to download Knoppix here's a link and the file name KNOPPIX_V5.0.1CD-2006-06-01-EN.iso

5.0.1=version
CD= CD version
2006-06-01=release date
EN= English
.iso= image file format

http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knopp...6-06-01-EN.iso

LiveCD are loaded into memory, so yes after you reboot everything will be lost. You can choose to install Knoppix to your harddrive also by running sudo knoppix-installer at the boot option.

You can get the DVD version here, it's just with more add on.

MAKE SURE it is burned as an image, and yes, that's it.

I do not see an option for installing KNOPPIX when i first boot the computer. Should there be one? It only asks if I want to run KNOPPIX. Thanks guys.

There isn't a menu to install Knoppix, run it. Once you are in the desktop open up konsole, and execute the command sudo knoppix-installer this will provoke the installation.

Refer to this link if you need more information http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Hd_Install_HowTo
