6.10 will do whatever resolution you want. I think maybe you should gain some expertise in configuring X before you mess with Beryl/XGL/etc.
Ndiswrapper can be installed (
apt-get install ndiswrapper), it doesn't have to be packaged with the distro. The reason it probably doesn't come pre-installed is because 6.10 is packaged with a newer kernel which has support for more wireless cards.
Sticking with old software doesn't mean sticking with stable software, it means having to deal with compatibility problems with new stuff (like Beryl). Either way, all versions of Ubuntu are equally unstable so it really won't make a difference.
Is there a way to correct it? Couldn't tell you. Probably because you're using an older version of Xorg than what Beryl is written to work with. Possibly because you haven't configured X properly, or because you haven't installed the right video drivers (what kind of video card do you have?) Probably because you are missing some libs that Beryl needs. I don't know.
