I would get an ethernet modem and an ethernet router. USB sucks, especcialy for modems and routers because most routers don't have USB.

We also had a cheap USB modem and we were looking for an USB router with ethernet ports, they were **** expensive.

You have to check your modems manufacturer website and see if they got drivers for Linux.

goto redhat.com and check their database for hardware(its free), if it works under redhat chances are it will work under any linux version

The bb modem i use is actually from my phone company (BT: British Telecom) So i doubt they would have drivers for linux. But, i know the chipset, firmware etc etc so it be just possible to find one which has the same, and download that driver.

@ TheMajor: how much better are those ethernet modems??

they are better because you don't need to install the drivers all the time, and they have more problems (like every USB device)

an ethernet modem just has to be connected to ur LAN card and it works. and almost all routers are ethernet

but i dunno if there are any differences in speed.

if you go the ethernet route just put two cards in your linux box and use it as a router, ip network translation and ip masquerading is part of the linux kernel.
