Is unix a open source OS or do you have to buy it ???

UNIX itself is NOT an open source operating system, but most of its clones, like BSD and Linux are.

Yes. http://distrowatch.com lists most of the popular Linux and BSD distros and where to download them.

Yeah Man,

Go for Linux, that is open source. You can D/L it from various mirrors, depending on which distrobution you choose. I'd Personally do A "google" to find A D/L mirror, that is Geographically Close to you.

Some Unix distros are open source, such as Free BSD, Sun Solaris 10 ect..

With this said I would not recomend them for the newb. Go with Linux.
