If you did something like 'cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup' then you have a backup. Do a 'ls /etc/X11/' in the terminal to see.

Now that I look in Synaptic, I don't have nvidia-settings installed either. I guess it was included in the driver that I have. Which version of the Nvidia driver are you using? You must have an older version, I have 1.0-9629.

As for your last question, I have no clue. As I said in my last post, I have never tried this before. The resolution that I want was already in Ubuntu's 'Screen Resolution' thing. It's worth a shot, though.

Well let's see. nvidia-xconfig is 1.0+20051122-2, and xserver-xorg-video-nv is 1:1.2.0. I assume the first one is the driver you're asking about as far as version??

Negative, nvidia-xconfig is just a utility for modifying your xorg.conf. nvidia-settings should tell you the driver version.

1.0-9746.

Just out of sheer curiosity, is there anyway to launch nvidia-settings from a gui? I just like to know how to do things through the terminal AND gui, so if it's available to get to from the gui I'd like to know just for sake of... well, for sake of knowing.

Hmm, that's weird that you have a newer driver but an older version of nvidia-settings. It's probably because the one in the Ubuntu repos is older than the one I have.

As for the GUI thing, you can go into System > Preferences > Menu Layout and add a launcher for nvidia-settings to the gnome-panel, if it did not get put there when it was installed.

How can I update the older version of nvidia-settings? Which repo is it I need to change? (if need be)

Looks like the one I have installed is included with the nvidia-glx package.
