Default Ubuntu 7.10 GPU problems...

yeah, so I installed the new Ubuntu last night and I have to say I like it a lot. WAY more than Kubuntu 7.4 (eww)...anyways...I tried installing drivers through "Restricted Driver Management"...didn't work, because now my videos play audio fine, but about 3/4 of video formats are "laggy"...the picture is "shaky", "jumpy"...idk how else to describe it.

I have a Sapphire x1950 Pro 512mb for a GPU and I remember that Kubuntu 7.4 gave me a few problems, and especially 7.10...but while this isn't too bad, it's pretty annoying having to get back on XP to watch videos.

Any ideas?...if nothing else it'd only take me 30 min to reinstall the OS and set it back up the way I want, but I'd really like to know what the problem is...I just like to know things XD

BTW...I'm on my 2nd install of today, becaues the after first one I accidently installed 2 gpu drivers and got a blank screen after reboot.

The only thing i can say is that Ubuntu's support for current ATi cards is lack luster. Just read some other threads that mention this:

Radeon 9200 PCI, "radeon" drivers, second graphics card, and problems
ATi Radeon Linux Drivers...HORRIBLE MADNESS!?!?
Your incompability issues with Linux.

So as you can see many people cant get the ATi stuff to work on Ubuntu. Not even some veterans of Linux. You would have to get ahold of ATi and see if they plan on releasing some better driver or get ahold of the Ubunutu people see if anything has been worked out.

what media player are you using and what renderer? try mplayer and switch the video driver (right click on the video window/preferences/video) to either XV or GL. see if that helps.

I'm using VLC...it's always worked flawlessly for me and saves me the hassle of installing codecs.

Maybe I'll just try to reinstall it for the 3rd time, but not install any drivers at all. I'll be trying mplayer today and hopefully that'll fix it. I don't plan on gaming at all on ubuntu (that's about the only thing XP is good at IMO)

thanks guys!
