| Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422. Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. No sound. Hi there. Been a while since I've been here... I encountered some issues after buying a new laptop. I set up a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. Most things work fine in it. Compiz Fusion was easy to set up and is flawless. My internal wireless NIC isn't supported yet, so I used a wireless usb adapter that was. So for the time being I made a separate route around the wireless issue.
However my current issue is my sound. For the life of me, I cannot get my sound to work. I have no idea what to do. I've tried everything in ALSA as well as OSSv4. Either way, I didn't have much luck.
Is there any support or drivers or anything available that I just haven't come across yet? When I search for the sound card in my laptop, whether it's device manager in vista, in ubuntu, or in the pdf that came with the laptop, it all says Realtek High Definition Audio.
I hope somebody here has a clue about what I can do to get this sound to work.

That will probably be your best bet. Either that or ask this over at the Ubuntu forums. Ubuntu Forums
They will be able to help you out faster and better than most here.

I asked over at Ubuntuforums. There's a 9 page thread going on which hasn't helped the situation, so I figured I'd try my luck here.

| Re: Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422. Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. No sound. I found this on LQ.org: Quote:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-generic
Then add the following to the end of your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file:
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=acer
(I know the laptop is a Toshiba but the acer designation in that line worked for me.)
Then reboot.
| This is supposed to work with "Linux Mint" however being based on ubuntu I don't see why it shouldn't work
cheers,
Jake |

| Re: Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422. Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. No sound. jakec - I seen that after posting this and did that same fix to my laptop. The downside is, when I plug in headphones, my main speakers don't shut off... Kind of renders headphones useless for using the laptop as my jukebox in lab doing school work.
In doing this, I decided to just use Vista as my primary OS with a small partition of Ubuntu Linux. That way in the future I can boot to Ubuntu to see if new updates (as I get them) fix any issues.
My main desktop is still Ubuntu Linux and will remain that way. But for the laptop, which I use at school and stuff, it kind of makes sense to use it since Vista works 100% with the laptop (wireless, sound, etc) and also is compatible with other school applications that I need.
Which - I have another thread going on about this topic, but speaking of Vista... is there a way to increase the size of my Vista partition when it's already established + installed?

| @ Jayce
yes I haven't been able to find a solution for that yet. As this fix has had that downside for a number of users, At least you have sound on the Laptop now. |
