If you have a DSL connection you can download linux for free from many of the distributors. Or you can go to Ubuntu's website and have them send you a CD for free https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ and last if you still want to buy a cd there is a list of sites that sells them quite cheap.

Cheapbytes http://shop.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart
OSDisc http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.c....html?ad=osdir
Edmunds http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/index.php

...etc.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND UBUNTU.
And I probably never will.

If you want to get your feet very wet, then I suggest straight Debian.

I also recommend Ubuntu. The new release rocks. I have "recruited" many people with it and they love it. The ship it thing takes a loong time so I recommend spending the $5 to buy it elsewhere.

NewIdea,

Again I am with Macdude on this I DO NOT reccomend Ubuntu and never will, however I Do reccomend Kubuntu (they also ship CDs free) but as other people in this thread have stated it takes a while so you would be better off buying them.

To this End I'd Reccomend you look at the links
cuiq has provided.

here is the Kubuntu shipit Link: https://shipit.kubuntu.org/

Or if you prefer PM me and I'll send you out a copy of a distro, I have over 50! I would be more then willing to do this for you

Now for a few Personal Reccomendations:

Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

Knoppix
http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=5

PCLinuxOS
http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/html/download.html

BeatrIX

Hope this Helps,

Jake

Use Ubuntu. Both my servers and my workstation run Ubuntu and have been up and running with no problems for months!

(3-2, one more!)
