Default Spyware?

About 4 hours or so ago, I left to go to see one of my freinds. I left the computer connected to my dial-up account, because I was downloading updates. I left Firefox open also. When I got home, I noticed that there were 2 new tabs opened that were directed to www.jwz.org. I googled this URL, and it seems that this is some sort of spam. This is the best link I could find on JWZ: http://www.spamblogging.com/archives/000154.html

And here, it is recognized as "unidentified adware".

Maybe linux isn't as secure as one would think? Who knows... any ideas on what I might be able to do to prevent this from opening in the future? Maybe it is just firefox. I have 1.0.3, but they found 2 security holes just recently, so maybe it has something to do with that.

Wow, that's crazy. Never heard of anything like that before.

I dunno...ask in the Virus section?

Although not as common as in the case of Windows, spyware's still out there for this OS. However, most of the spyware detection utilities are available for linux as well.

Do you know of any? I looked at Lavasoft, and they don't carry one, nor is there a version of Spybot Search & Destroy for Linux. I searched sourceforge.net and couldn't find anything either.

Thanks!

I stand corrected; I thought there was a wide availability of detection utilities focused on Linux; however...

Check these out:

not much in the way of malware products for linux, no need, a simple 'ps x' in a terminal shows all, so does 'top'

what your browser did isnt so much a security issue as a browser issue, the website you visited had a script for redirects with a forced new tab, doesnt mean it has permissions/rights to do much else with your system,I wouldnt be concerned

Only thing is, I had the browser on the home page of these forums. I'm more curious as to how and why it happened, I imagined it was a firefox flaw rather than a system flaw, but I wanted to be sure.

javascript and a few tricks and the popup blocker in firefox can be gotten around, once that happens, bad code can do what it can and put a new popup on your screen, even on a time delay, so you might wander away and all of a sudden awhile later get a popup, the code is still in the browser cache waiting to do its thing.

ive had issues with having lots of tabs open and being at some sites like msnbc or cnn.com sometimes, not sure if thats firefox or bad html or both
