Default sound problem on UBUNTU

Hi, I am a "lucky" owner of a Gateway MX 3215 laptop computer, and I have a problem with sound. If I play a sound file or watch a video, I can see the time running, but no sound. I am USING UBUNTU - The sound icon seems to be muted and I cannot change it. clicking, double clicking, nothing

How are we supposed to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of sound card you have?

Do lspci and paste the output here.

Oh, it's in VMware. You need to install VMware tools, do that from the menu in VMware.

That pretty much gives it away right there. Install VMware tools and if it still doesn't work, post back.

Arrow getting stuck installing vmware tools

I got a bit stuck installing vmware tools:

HERE IS THE OUTPUT : I DO NOT KNOW WHERE AND WHAT THE C HEADER IS>

None of the pre-built vmhgfs modules for VMware Tools is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmhgfs module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory.

THEN
I TRIED /usr/src and this is the output

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.11) does not match your running
kernel (version 2.6.15-27-386). Even if the module were to compile
successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.
