| Monster Techie | Hey everyone. I just installed today Linux RH9, Win98 and WinXP Pro using BootIt NG's software. Everything works perfect except that my sound does not work in Linux. RH says that it has found my soundcard, soundblaster live 5.1 and i play the test sound but nothing happens. After it asks me if I heard the sound and I say no and it just says that sound won't work now. Has anyone else had this prob and fixed it? Thanks, Chris

| So you have a SoundBlaster 7.1 and Redhat is recognizing it as a Soundblaster 5.1? You probably need to update the kernel and alsa. There is a possibility that the sound is being output in one of the other channels, try plugging your speakers in the other outputs Redhat 9 is ancient and no longer supported, it would be a better idea to use a more modern distro.

| Become Super User open up a terminal and add the proper plug in to play MP3s. Not enabled by defualt due to laws. Also do not trust what the RedHat/Fedora OS picks for you enter the list and choose the card yourself then go out and seek the proper drivers. To play MP3s =========================== yum install gstreamer-plugins-mp3 =========================== if Yum isn't installed take the steps to do so. Become super user and open a terminal. ======================================== cd /etc mv -f yum.conf yum.conf.bak wget http://www.fedorafaq.org/samples/yum.conf ======================================== then ================================ rpm -Uvh http://www.fedorafaq.org/yum ================================

| Monster Techie | lol thanks everyone for the help but i think every single one of u gave me a diff way of doing things. is there any way better than the other? i checked and im not muted. my sound card is 7.1 and it detected 5.1 but in the list it didn't give me an option for 7.1 i also went to creative and there were drivers for everything, solaris and FreeBSD too, except linux. they need to make more things compatible with linux ![]()

| Give me the name of your card I doubt it's full name is Creative 7.1 Sound Card. Also have you tried the installing the plug in with Yum (installing Yum if not installed before as well)?

| in the sound setup routine set the memory address and dma number to the right setting, its probably conflicting with something........when you test you will hear sound if its set right open a terminal as root and type:lsmod---->make sure the kernel has detected the card and has loaded a driver module, it may also give you the dma and memory address you need |
