Default Shell Accounts

I really don't understand what these are and what they are used for. What I think I know about them so far is that they are a way for you to connect to a unix server's shell, why would you want to do that? I also understand that you can have e-mail, webspace, etc. How does this all work? Can someone explain this to me?

horndude is on a distinguished road

Default

no different than the existing shell accounts on your own linux box, just accessed remotely

it also allows non unix or non linux users to access a shell account remotely so they can use them too
