Default Running Windows AND Linux

Alright, first of all, i've heard nothing but GREAT things about linux. I am going to get the parts for my computer on friday and I won't have access to my usual Windows XP for a week or so. Sooo, I am planning on installing Linux when I set everything up firday.

How will it work exactly? Do I download Linux from a website and burn it on a CD so i can boot it up or do I need windows on my computer first?

Next, is it possible to have Window and Linux installed at the same time? If so, will I run into any complications?Would an emulator work well?

Lastly, I think the only reason I will need Windows ever is for games (i.e. Half Life 2, Counterstrike:Source, Battlefield 2) If its somehow possible to run those games on Linux, i think i could make a Windows-free system.

Sorry for all these newbie questions, I'm a Linux virgin.

*EDIT* Go down 3-4 posts to see Specs

Yes, go grap Ubuntu, it's recommended for starters, burn it to a cd, it'll be bootable, installation should be a breeze.

You can dual boot, install Windows XP first, then install your Linux distro. It will configure everything for you.

You should have Windows for your games, I dual boot into Windows just for gaming and the rest of my activity is all on Linux.

You're gonna have fun with Linux, if Ubuntu doesn't please you, there's a ton of Linux distro around. Try them all out and see what fits your machine.

You should list your hardwares spec, brand and stuff.

BF1942 works, but BF2 is kinda buggy in Cedega.

It's O.K that your a Virgin, we will be gentle

yeah pretty much to answer your first question, you D/L the Linux flavor of your choice burn it to CD and bang.... it's that easy

Of couse it's possible to run windows and Linux at the same time this is called dual booting.

Now I have a Vendetta against emulators, tey are slow buggy and don't work well however there are games that work well under Linux as said above you can play CS, HL2 and Battlefeild you can find a short list here: http://www.tech-forums.net/showthrea...ht=Linux+games

as for Which distro Most people will reccomend ubuntu, and from what I have been told by my good friend and mentor The General the latest Version of Ubuntu is Solid. Also if you would Prefer KDE as oppose to Gnome there is Kubuntu. Both these Distros Ship CDs to your door Free:

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
https://shipit.kubuntu.org/

as for my own reccomendations try these:

Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

PCLinuxOS .92
http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/dist...glish/preview/
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distr...glish/preview/

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.

All we like to know is the motherboard, if you have any wireless card and what type of video card, the rest should be fine on Linux (Processor, HD, CD/DVD drive, Memory)

The wireless card is the most troublesome, and the sound card.

You have to supply the actual link to the product, not the link that's on your account since that's only cached on your machine and can't be seen by others.

Again, how do people screw up links again? Copy and paste and it becomes a link ... at which point does it get the "..." in it? I have NEVER had this problem.

... wtf? Well, i must of linked it from the wrong place... lol, sorry abou that one guys. I'll edit them in a second

I see what i did now, i feel sheepish

By the way, i meant Battlefield 2, not 1942,

Don't know if that changes anything.

Another edit, can I first install Ubuntu and then install Win XP a few days later? Or do I have to have Win XP before Ubuntu
