Default Running Linux on old comp

I have a newer computer, that I am running WinXP on. I want to try out Linux, but don't want to use my new computer because it is shared by others in the household. I have an older computer (I'm not exactly sure of the specs, but i think its a 266 mhz, with at least a 2.6 GB hd. This comp WILL run win 95.)
Will this computer be able to run linux at a usable speed ... (i will only be using it for simple things like word processing)? What distro do u think would be best?

horndude is on a distinguished road

Default

any of them will work just fine, just be careful not to installl EVERYTHING on some distro's or you wont have much disk space left
