it says that my driver is vesa, and if i try changing it to say nvidia it crashes X and i have to fix it in the text-mode (what's the proper name of it??).

next part down from that, there's two driver entries, at the bottom of the graphics device section, and the generic one is "nv", the one you want should be "nvidia"

I think you changed the first one where it says "vesa", leave that one alone,goto next one down

Then at the top of the config file, make sure "dri" does not get loaded and "glx" does(I think), you really should check nvidia's intructions rather than taking my word for it

there is no driver option beneath where it says vesa.

i'll check nvidia's manual tomorrow.

ok, i did everything nvidia's manual said to do on XF86Config-4, but everytime i change driver "vesa" to driver "nvidia" X gets messed up and i have to fix it in text-mode. this should not be happening, what's wrong???

I have no idea, X is very very picky about how its set up, this is why I said follow the nvidia install directions exactly

one more thing you can try, reset it back to the generic nvidia driver "nv" and change resoltuion back to 1024x768 and make sure it works, then set it to "nvidia" and try it again, it might not be working at max resolution with the nvidia driver, you might have to go thru some trial and error

I belive X has a log file, check that and see whats in it, it will have clues as to whats happening, the monitor settings have be correct as well, close wont work sometimes
