Segamaster222 is on a distinguished road

Default Realtek RTL8187 linux

Well I want to install linux and try to get it up and running today, I am an advanced windows user but I know almost nothing about linux. So I'm guessing installing my drivers wont be easy for me but I'm willing to learn this operating system.

Let me get started

I have a Asus m2n32 sli deluxe motherboard with the Realtek RTL8187 adapter built in. When i switch over to ubuntu I need to put all the stuff i need on a flash drive which is no problem. It's just I don't know what things to put on there and i don't know what i'm supposed to do after. I guess thats why I'm here .

In conclusion if theirs anyone who can link me to the correct drivers and see if they can help me get started. Once i get to the internet I will be fine.

EDIT: I have Linspire 6.0, ubuntu and Kubuntu, which one should i use?

Thanks eveyrone.

Default Re: Realtek RTL8187 linux

Welcome to the Linux world, Sega!

I've been using Ubuntu for the last 4 years. I have tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, several versions of Mandriva, **** Small Linux, Puppy Linux, several versions of openSuSe, Fedora Core 8, Fedora Core 9, and quite a few more.

My hands down choice? Ubuntu. Kubuntu and Ubuntu are pretty much the same with the exception of Ubuntu=Gnome, Kubuntu=KDE. I personally prefer Gnome... I'm not a big fan of KDE at all.

Ahh, to your question at hand... the RTL8187B... man aren't you lucky! I have that in my laptop, and to date I haven't been able to get it to work. But go ahead, ask me how much I've worked on it? Sadly, not much at all!

One of these days, I will try out the very link I'm about to send you in hopes of getting it to work.

[all variants] HOWTO: Get RTL8187B (ID: 8197) Working. Step by Step - Ubuntu Forums

Note: "I can confirm that no encryption and passphrase WPA works with network manager.
WEP doesn't work properly. I think its a problem with open key."

Let me know how this works out for you! Once I get my rsync network project figured out on my Ubuntu desktop, I plan to tackle my Ubuntu laptop's wireless. Until then - I'm content running my laptop in XP since all I use it for is AIM and Firefox. (hence my laziness)
