Default Really odd problem with GUI. Need help

Ok so i i'll put down everything i did in this session:

I uninstalled samba-client and samba-common. THen i reinstalled samba-common (for some reason uninstalling samba-common removes nautilus, sound juicer and a few others) I also changed my splash screen and ticked "Allow TCP connections" on the same menu where you can change the splash image. THen i logged out, and logged in, and it is using like, a wierd GUI. with light green/blue colors, no taskbar, only a terminal, mozilla and a clock. If i log out and click sessions to change the desktop to kde or gnome there is nothing there. I'm guessing this is the failsafe terminal? But what could have caused this and how can i fix it?

Also note: I'm running on Fedora Core 4

thats XDM

you may have broken gnome or kde or both lol

try reinstalling gnome and kde and see what happens

PS if you click on the desktop on XDM, you get a menu of all the programs and stuff. you need to hold the button down though, other wise the menu will disappear when you release the button

I think I broke both. Anyway, I restarted to add gnome and kde back via the CDs. Now when the computer boots (without the Cds) it says "Uncompressing linux....Ok, Booting the kernel." Then it loads about 10 seconds and says "hdc: Timeout waiting for DMA" Then like 10 seconds later "hdc: Drive not ready for command" then it says something like "Reading all physical volumes. this make take a while..." then it says "hdc: Timeout waiting for DMA" Then like 10 seconds later "hdc: Drive not ready for command" like 5 times. then it says "Found volume drive "volgroup00" using metadata type lvm2" Then it does noting no matter how long I leave it, I can't do ctrl+alt+f1, Or any other buttons (The only thing I can do is CTRL+ALT+DEL). But I can select a grub command line, edit boot options, etc. from the grub menu if there is a way I can fix it from there. Is it something wrong with the kernel? How can I fix this? I don't have any other operating system on the computer either.

Really need to get this fixed

A re-install, this will fix the problem, Just backup the files you want before you re-install....

If i really, really have to. But i have some files (Not the most important) that if i could get back, would be nice. Also, if it comes to a reinstall i might just go to debian, as fedora has caused me lots of trouble:o

download a knoppix CD and burn it using a different computer, boot, copy the files to an external harddrive or burn them to a cd/dvd
