Default Random wifi driver breakdowns

I have been using Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS for a couple of months now with wifi that i got working with ndiswrapper, but now when i boot the comp the network manager (nm-applet) says that there is no wireless adapter but when i goto wireless settings it says that wlan0 is active. The only way to fix it is to reinstall network manager then reboot and sometimes if I'm lucky that'll work. the only recent changes i have made was i set the IP to static instead of using DHCP and i have started using SSH with a VNC tunnel but those services have always been installed and running i just used them 4 the first time.

ps when i do get it fixed, the next time i reboot, it doesn't work

Is there a config file or maybe a startup script that is breaking it every time it boots Linux?
