Default questions about linux

Hello
i have never used linux my father i think used an older version long time ago so i know nothing about it well i know some
im on an pentuim 1.3 gig laptop *ibm r31* the ibm tech laught at me on the phone when i said that andways .... its got 256meg ram and 20 gig hd..
i was just wondering how hard it would be to converte my xpee OS to a linux os and if i could do so with minamal loss to my files?
and how hard would it be to get drivers for my system after i convert?

It is similar to DOS, being that it is a text-based system and uses many similar commands.

However, there are now Windows-like GUIs for Linux, most of which are based on the X window system. KDE and GNOME are the most popular ones.

to save your files you can make a fat32 partition and copy all your files there then use the rest of the space on your hd to format as a ext3 or reiserfs partition as /

I highly recommend you back up your files before you attempt any of this though. First time I tried Mandrake (now Mandriva), I wiped my entire hdd accidentally.

Get an external drive, make a backup, get a version of Mandrake-Mandriva (btw, try to get a commercial one,there are commercial drivers included and you will not need to install it by yourself later) , boot from the first CD, go ahead. I used to have Linux on IBM ThinkPad 600X
