Unhappy problems installing xine, mplayer...

First, I'd like to say sorry if this is a common problem-

I've got kubuntu installed, and I'm having problems getting applications via apt-get.

i can't apt-get xine, xineui, or mplayer... I can't even get xmms...

it can't fine the packages.

when i attempt to install mplayer from the sources, it won't run because it thinks i have an old gcc version.. (which I don't)

& when I try to run the xine sh file, it gives me an error also.

Has anyone had any luck installing a video player in Kubuntu?
how?
