the abovementioned 'xorgconfig' or 'xf86config' will take care of your displayproblems, just pick your card.
as far as the ethernet card, you probably don't have support for your card compiled into the kernel. i recommend doing a google search for a good kernel compiling guide and going from there. also, KDE and gnome have good tools built in to change options in your kernel.
