| Re: Play Time for Compaq (Installing Linux on Compaq) i'd say that all it needs is the right distro, you don't need to throw it away. just a really lightweight distro.
DSL or Puppy would be good
feather linux isn't too bad either.

Sorry, but sometimes I can't spell for sh*t.
Jake, how do you feel about xubuntu. I've tired it and it seem to be pretty good. Any thoughts on that? |

| Re: Play Time for Compaq (Installing Linux on Compaq) Xubuntu.....
Don't Particularly care for it myself but others do... Don't Like ubuntu much either but allot of people round here like it. Comes down to what you are most comfortable using, if you like then use it, if you decide you don't like it, Linux is free just keep going till you find one you like. I went through around 40 distros before I found PCLinuxOS
Keep that chipper chin up

Xubuntu, Puppy, DSL in that order is my suggestion.
Xubuntu is nice and the Ubuntu community are outrageously helpful.

| Re: Play Time for Compaq (Installing Linux on Compaq) Oh kay, I am having a little bit of problem installing xubuntu on the laptop. I'm going to try a few more things, and then hope it works. If not, I am going to try a new distro.
I was wonder what everyone thinks is a really good LIGHT weight OS. I need the distro to be able to run on laptop with 64 mbs of ram, but heavy on the GUI. I need a OS that can be worked by a 7th grader.
Let me make a check list:
- Light OS (goes easy on the specs)
- Heavy GUI system (can be used by a caveman)
- Word program (maybe something like OpenOffice)
- Gaim (some kind of messager)
- Firefox (probably stander on most distrio)
- Media Player (this is a maybe, but she might need it. At least for cds)
I heard Puppy and DSL is two really great light weight OSs. Are they good on the GUI side of life? |

| Re: Play Time for Compaq (Installing Linux on Compaq) puppy is quite easy, and has all those programs you need, except you should get a version older than 1.02, because after that, the requirements jumped up to 128mb ram.
i haven't personally tried DSL, but i have heard it is quite nice, and includes all the programs.
actually, i am going to download it right now. i'll tell you what i think soon.

| Re: Play Time for Compaq (Installing Linux on Compaq) try feather linux, it worked kinda slow on my old laptop with only 32mb ram, so it would work pretty well on 64,
it includes gaim, dillo (lightweight web browser), a media player, very easy to use, all the hardware and stuff is detected
