Default Pctel Hsp 56 Modem alive or dead?

Hello ,

I have fedora-core 1 kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl and a pctel-hsp56 modem .

I got the latest drivers from the limodems website for fedora core 1 . The installation went fine and detected my chipset as a PCT789. I loaded the modules with insmod -f pctel and insmod -f ptserial . /dev/ttyS15 Is also linked with /dev/modem

Then when I start wvdial , i get "modem not responding" and when I pick up the handset of my phone at this point , my line dies , and i have to restart my PC to get the dial tone back.

I have no kppp installed. And there is no file like wvdial.conf.When I use wvdialconf ,i get negative results for all the query.

Now what do I do to connect to net via dial up ?

Thanks

whats your wvdial.conf file look like?

did the drivers come with ay docs?

Ive had mixed results with wvdial, kppp has been pretty good though

last time I used a reg phone modem I ended up using a homemade script

sounds like its working but not being iniatilized properly, some modems need certain codes to work like "atdt" for example to get them to unhook and dial.

if youve got wvdial installed try looking in /usr/share/doc somewhere, usually every piece of software on a linux system has a doc for it in there. If not, find wvdial source on the net and there should be a sample wvdial conf file for you to use but just modify to suit your needs.

if your system database is setup already try "locate wvdial" and see what pops up, should show where its installed and if there's any doc file present for it.I know it comes with a sample.

http://www.tldp.org and search for it there too-->mass linux documentation project site, everything you wanted to know but were afraid to go there LOL.The wvdial complete script is in there with docs, more than likely linked to ppp, you will want to read that too.

Oh ya, have you tried netconfig or anything like that, seems like fedora has something of that nature?

since about 1998 or so I think, I dunno, whenever redhat 5.2 first came out.

I hang at other linux forums too, this forum was new when I signed up, seemed like nobody answered many questions so I figured Id jump in and help out as best I can.

so many distros out there and some really strange questions makes it interesting thats for sure, all I can do is try to help,Ive had to learn prettymuch everything the hard way, hoping others dont have too.
