Gnome is better, IMO. It doesn't really matter which one you get, as you can just apt-get install gnome or kde if you decide you want to change, but I'd go with Ubuntu if I were you, and if you decide you want KDE then apt-get install kde.

If you were installing 10.2 a5 I suggest not since it's not stable yet. But 10.1 not installing Grub I wouldn't understand why unless you didn't specify it to install on the MBR and not the SUSE partition.
It was 10.1. I didn't give me the option to install GRUB but I assume it would have done it automatically as when I was sorting out the partitions it picked up 2 windows installs.

SUSE 10.1 default grub install goes to the SUSE partition which doesn't always work depending on your BIOS. You have to choose expert option and click on booting, there you'll see where it is being install. The location part by default is always /dev/sda2 for my first sata drive, but I need to change it to /dev/sda. Which /dev/sda1 is my WinXP and /dev/sda2 is SUSE.
