Default Noob Linux

Follwoing advice from everyone on here, I have installed a few different versions of linux and found one I am finally happy with.

Ubuntu 5.1 has been the best so far. I am running it on a dell inspiron 4000 (p3 900 128mb ram). It is a little slow but workable. I love the package manager and the fact that root is disabled by default, which is closer to an xp install (primary account has admin rights). I managed to install the mp3 codec, which is a feat for me as I have never been able to get anyhting installed on Linux.

To make a long story short, ubuntu is the way to go for noobs.

DSL came in a close second but just didnt have enough stuff.

That is Fair enough,

I liked Ubuntu too when I was first starting out (4.10) but I switched when 5.04 came and version 5.10 didn't impress me much...

I now use PCLinuxOS

Remember Linux is a little more complicated than Windows, just stick with it

It is good to see you are beginning your journey Toward computing enlightinment, Congratulations man

I tried Suse 10.1. Dont get me wrong, it was pretty good but notice my system specs. It was terribly slow. I am using my girlfriends old laptop to learn linux so I need an OS that will run on a slower PC.

Noob distros are good, but I highly advise you step up to something more advanced once you get some experience under your belt, because they are more customizible and much more fun to work with. You won't regret it.

The new gnome is actually pretty light. Dev's made many improvements in speed and code.

First, what does WM stand for. I know you are you talking about the equivalent of a windows shell but is it actually called. Second, can I just change that? For instance, I have ubuntu which uses Gnome--is it possible to change to this fluxbox I see everyone talking about. I am googling now but responses are welcome. (just no "google it" responses because I am)

sudo apt-get install fluxbox

then logout and go to sessions, pick fluxbox and login

i prefer blackbox over fluxbox, you can apt-get blackbox too
