Default No sound with Fedora Core 3.

I hate posting vague things like this, but I'm a Linux no0b and am really lost here. So here goes: I just reinstalled Fedora Core 3. During the install, the soundcard was detected, and the little acustic guitar rift played nicely. But once the install finished, I've got no sound at all. Dead silence. My sound card is an Electronics Inc CM8738. I recently installed RealPlayer GOLD for linux right after install. Does anyone have any idead? Any help would be apreciated.

horndude is on a distinguished road

Default

as root in a terminal type:
lsmod--------------that will list what modules are loaded, check for the one for CM8738
lspci----------------that will list all pci devices, make sure its detected

if it is detected and module is loaded, open a mixer program, try rexima or alsamixer or aumix and make sure the sound isnt muted

try that and get back to me

Okay, this is what I get when typing lsmod: (I"m assuming snd refers to sound.)
snd_cmipci 38497 0
snd_pcm_oss 51953 0
snd_mixer_oss 18241 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 99657 2 snd_cmipci,snd_pcm_oss
snd_page_alloc 9669 1 snd_pcm
snd_opl3_lib 12353 1 snd_cmipci
snd_timer 33093 2 snd_pcm,snd_opl3_lib
snd_hwdep 9185 1 snd_opl3_lib
gameport 5057 1 snd_cmipci
snd_mpu401_uart 10049 1 snd_cmipci
snd_rawmidi 28641 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 8781 2 snd_opl3_lib,snd_rawmidi
snd 56741 10 snd_cmipci,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_o pl3_lib,snd_timer,snd_hwdep,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_ra wmidi,snd_seq_device
soundcore 10785 1 snd

this is what I get when I type lspci:
00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)

Next, under KMIX, I turned the Master and PC Speaker volume to two thirds of the way up. Still nothing, when I do the sound card detection. It tells me what the card is, but still no sound.

Here's a bit of an update: after inatalling flashplayer into my browser, the sound played. (Infact, it scared the crap out of me, because I'd forgotten I'd turned my speakers up and left them that way.) But strangely enough, the sound card detector still remains silent, and I'm betting if I play any streaming media or CDs they be silent as well.

check mixer settings again, something isnt right

check "arts" as well if your using KDE, the KDE sound system does weird things sometimes, you may have to turn arts off, and make sure OSS(open sound system) is installed

the card is working, module is loaded and hardware detected
