Default New OS set up

I just realized I could get more use out of my 2 hard drives (one 10gig, one 40 gig) if I moved my OSs (WinXP, and a distro of Linux) to the 10 gig drive and format the 40 gig to FAT32 to share files...

I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't run into any bumps before I went and formatted my drives. Does everything sound like it will work?

How do you want to move them? Or do you mean you want to formati everything and install XP+Linux on the 10gig?

That should work fine. Make sure to install Xp first.

Will there be any problems with directories? like if i have a folder on the 40 gig called music will windows see it as i.e. D:/music and Linux will see it as /hdc/music or whatever the path under linux would be?

No, I don't think there will be any problems. Make sure to use FAT32 for your music disc to be able to write files in linux.

And should I keep the OS drive all in FAT32 as well? or can i have XP in NTFS and Linux in ext3 or whatever... they can both read/write to FAT32?

Both will be able to read+write to any FAT32 partition. Linux is not able to write to an NTFS partition, though.

I can't seem to format the 40 gig drive to FAT32. The format runs and then when it finishes it says it can't format a system partition, even though the drive is completely empty...

I haven't installed linux on the other partition of my 10 gig drive yet... Will the Linux disc be able to convert my 40 gig drive to FAT32?

Using XP you can only format/create a FAT32 partition up to 32GB. Use FDISK from the 98bootfloppy www.bootdisk.com
