it might be in the xorg log file, which I think will be in /var/log/x something or in /etc/X11/ x something

or if its short, you can hold the shift key and run your mouse across the text, then type pico or vi which will open a text editor, then click both mouse buttoms at the same time, it will paste it in the editor, then save it as a file

without any unix or linux experience your going to run into real problems here because you dont have the skills or know how just yet to troublshoot or even do basic things, we will try to help anyway

normally mandrake installs and sets up your graphic user interface automatically, when it fails to do so it means one of two things, a bad install or it isnt recognizing your hardware properly........both can be a pain to fix

x appears to not have been installed properly

try this just to be sure

when logged in as root type:
xorgconfig or xorgconfigure

that should bring up an x configuration program, it will ask lots of questions, you will need to know a few thngs like monitor refresh rates and such

other possibility is an .xinitrc file or x initialization file that starts the GUI right after X gets started was never created

type ls -a while logged in normally and see if it has a file called .xintirc or .Xauthority, if those dont exist, it may be in /etc/X11/xinit, somewhere there's a file that calls the gui program when the X server is started, they both have to work

im not familiar enough with mandrake to be of a whole lot of help here, some linux distro's have their own little quirks, but more or less they are all the same
