Default Never Used Linux or Unix..however I need an answer please.

A freind of mine lost some data on a hard drive after his computer was vandalized. His Linux or Unix computer does not work. The files had .fst extentions.

Using data recover software, I have been able to retreive files in a WINDOWS XP environment.

My question is if I take out his harddrive and put it into my windows based computer, would I be able to recover his files for him. Is there a specific software that would do this for me FROM a Windows environment?

Thank you for any insight you can provide.

Probably Unix services for Windows...but it doesn't always work as intended. If I were you, I'd just get a live Linux CD and copy the files from the old harddrive to your windows HD.

Default Unix

Remember I am very new to Unix...actually never used it. Do you mean install Unix on my Windows XP machine as a 2nd operating system?
What file system would that be compatable with?

Which version of Unix?

No, just a live CD, which runs a full Linux install on just a bootable CD. A good one, like Knoppix, should recognize both filesystems and you should just be able to copy the files from one HD to the other (the HDs should show up on the desktop...)

what you can do it download the ISO from that website, burn it, put it in the cd drive and reboot your computer, it will boot to knoppix, then find the files you want (last i checked, ntfs partitions mount automatically in knoppix for reading not writing) and hit alt f2 and type "k3b" and hit enter, this will run k3b, its a nero clone (well, its better lol) for linux, its fairly simple.. burn the data to dvds or cds and there you go.

Default Can I use knoppix in conjuction with Data Recovery Software?

Thank you for this site.... http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

There is a small chance that he also accidently deleted the one and only file he needs on the entire harddrive.

Can I use the 'windows based' data recovery software if I use knoppix? How?

windows based data recovery what?

just use knoppix, it will give him access to the harddrives, he will be able to find the one file if its that important, he'll know where it is.

theres no need for windows based data recovery software, you have a linux one.

OK. I will just use knoppix. Sounds like this is the ticket.

What will be the command for retreiving deleted data or will there be a windows type of interface so I can easily find it? If it is anything like DOS commands, holy crap.

delete data?

if its deleted, its deleted.

there will be a GUI with menus and windows and stuff like windows but it will look a bit different, there will be several "drive" icons on the desktop, one of them will be his harddrive, just open it up and all the files and folder and stuff will be there just liek in windows.

Hello General

I got knoppix, but confused about how to use it. I booted off of cd and it works..it gets to the desktop of knoppix. I am lost about how to use it. Could it be possible that I talk with you? I can call you on my dime and I promise that it won't take up more than a few minutes.
