| My Linux Box is up and running I installed Ubuntu on a P3-Celeron-800mhz, and it works well but i have a few questions.
1. It doesnt let me go any higher than 800x600, however in Windows, it can easily go to 1024x768 and higher. When i go into the "Screen Resoulution Preferences" it only has 640x480 and 800x600 options.
2. Also, i downloaded the XMMS Tarball, i type ./configure, and it does heaps of stuff, then it says it needs GLIB >= 1.2.2. What is this and hoq do i install it?
Thanks
Wayne

| To fix the resolution, type dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 as root and go to advanced and select all wanted resolutions.
As for the glib, search for it in synaptic (or whatever you use).
Hope this helps.

| Thats great Wayne. Did you type dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to fix the resolution? I had to do that with my pc.
Do you need the glib package still? I can direct you to one.
A nice feature you may not no about is when you are compiling packages, after typing make, instead of make install, type checkinstall. It will compile and make it into a .deb so you can add and remove easily. You will need the checkinstall package.
If you want to build packages from source in the respository, install apt-build. Then, you makesure you remove the package you want to build and then type apt-build install <package>. This will automaticly configure, build, and install (as a .deb) the package. It is usefull for stuff you may use often such as mozilla-firefox.

| actually i typed dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg instead of dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
I managed to get Glib, it installed it Automatically when i used APT-GET to get XMMS.
Im planning to do some more stuff with it today, ill try the checkinstall, and APT-Build and get some more progs.
Im also trying to figure out Samba.
Thanks
Wayne
