Start with playing just with Linux - command line, learning how it works. Then play with more stuff.

In terms of Partitioning Gparted is best, or use the Partitioning tool built into your distro (version) of choice....

I would use the Gparted Live CD myself as it is a very handy live CD you can use to partition machines with: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

May I reccomend that you read the documentation on gparted as it is quite good: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/documentation.php

as for programs, My suggestion would be the same as Macdude choose a distro and have a play with the installed programs, learn a bit of commandline, learn to partition etc..

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.
