Re: mp3 playback in ubuntu Just try opening an MP3 file in Ubuntu. Totem player will tell you it needs to go online and search for a usable codec, it will then prompt you to install the GStreamer codecs. It will then install them and you'll be able to play MP3's.
Alternatively, just go to Synaptic (or use apt-get install) and install the package "vlc", VLC Media Player is a lot better (in my opinion) than the built in player and VLC uses it's own codec set. The command to install VLC is "sudo apt-get install vlc".
