Ubuntu is Debian based and is very flexible and customisable. If you prefer there is a KDE version of Ubuntu out as well called Kubuntu. Also if your into servers, there is a stripped down fine tuned version for servers.

Ive used Ubuntu among other distros and i have found that it is the best. It has great support and good mirrors and the free shipit service.

You can't just judge usage like that. That is different for every Linux user. There is something different to suit everyone.

While I see Slackware as a very nice distribution [quite robust], I vouch for Gentoo. The customization and optimization is awesome. It is the most powerful distro and it is easy to use because of emerge as it resolves dependencies automatically. Gentoo doesn't have an easy install, but what comes close to Gentoo and is my second favorite distro is Debian. Apt is simply amazin.=g.

the original question was about "popular" distro, hard to find an accurate way to find out that info.......forum usage is a **** good way to do that IMHO

Well Debian based distros (like Ubuntu) have a thing called Apt and this lets you choose packages and programs you want and it will install it automatically. In Ubuntu and im sure there is an equivalent thing in other Debian based distros is Synaptic which puts all of that functionality into a easy to use GUI interface.
