Default Monitor or Video Card Problem?

Whenever I try to boot up a Linux distro I first get the normal console messages, but then when the point comes for X to start, I just get a black screen, just a blank/black screen, the monitor is still turned on and all that, but it just isn't doing ANYTHING. So I'm really not too sure of what I should do, anyone have any ideas? I heard it might be something about DDC information that my monitor gives out might be messed up. My video card is a Geforce 3 Ti-500 and my monitor is a Princeton Vf912
