Default messed up ubuntu

i went to upgrade my installation from dapper to edgy, just by changing the lines in my sources.list

when i restarted, natilus would not start... it kept giving me an unexpected error.

i went into the terminal and tried to apt-get install and apt-get update nautilus to try to fix any broken packages, but now when i log in all i get is a blank screen, and i see my cursor...

Use the terminal to back up all of your important data to somewhere else (external HD, networked computer, etc.) then reinstall.

If you must have a GUI to do this, go download Knoppix.

I messed up my Ubuntu install and fixed it with the live CD. I booted with the CD. When the menu came up asking what i wanted to do I pushed F6 (I think) and replaced the text in the command line to Boot:= recover. Or something to that affect. You can push F1 and read all the help tabs and it will help you do this.

Good luck!
