Default Media Player for Ubuntu

What media player is out there that is like Media Player Classic for Ubuntu? I want to be able to watch videos and whatever else while I'm crusing around on Ubuntu.

Totem is the most like MPC, but I prefer VLC.

Well I have Totem, but it won't play mpgs, and I don't know what other files it will play.

No, that's where I think I'm getting lost at. Where can I install all of the codecs?

Will that give me codecs to play any type of media file, or what are the other lines I need to get the major media files?
