Default Mandriva Linux 2006 Question

Just installed this and Win XP Pro on one hard drive. (Split Partitions) I think I am booting with something called LILO as the boot manager.

Currently everything appears to be working wonderfully. I have several options.

-linux
-linuxfb <<-- not right but something like that
-failsafe
-windows
-windows1

Those are the options. I boot the first linux and it loads the system etc perfectly. Then it tells me to logon, in sortof like a DOS looking screen. I simply type in my username and hit enter, it then asks for my PW, I simply type in that. I then hit enter and I get somerthing like [localhost]authority lastlogon feb.5. 32:23 blah blah blah,... Pretty sure this shouldn't be happening. I'm supposed to get in to the GUI... why am I still on this gay DOS looking thing. lol... Some help would be WONDERFUL!! quick help =] tyty

startx---------> type that and hit enter, if X isnt configured which mandriva usually does by default x will hang or crash, which means you will have to setup x first

xorgconfig usually, better check mandriva website for tutorial/setup guide, it has lots of automated things that usually happen during the install, the fact that this hasnt happened more than likely means you have a video card its not ready for

although my knowledge of linuxes is limited i am still giving you my suggestion. when your pc boots up into linux then the localhost.....blah blah.......lastlogin...stuff which appears is absolutely right. it tells you when you logged in from that terminal the last time. and thats the "cui" . now to go into gui ( if everything is configured properly ) then just hit "ctrl alt and f2 to f7" (dont hit all f2 to f7. it will just open more interfaces since linux supports multiusers and multitasking.) in my opinion "ctrl alt and F3" should do just fine. that will log you into the gui.
(like i said my knowledge is limited so if i am wrong dont curse me dude )
c ya!!!

also it is not necesarry for you to login into cui. you can log on directly into the gui after you open it!!!
